Sudan Coach Appiah Refutes Claims Of Criticizing Eric Chelle

Former Ghana national team coach, Kwesi Appiah, has dismissed reports suggesting he questioned the competence of Nigerian coach Eric Chelle, insisting he holds deep respect for his colleagues in the profession, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Chelle, a former Mali international defender, managed his country’s national team between 2022 and 2024 before being appointed head coach of Nigeria.

Reacting to the reports, Appiah expressed frustration over being misquoted.

“Most of the time, that’s why I don’t like doing interviews. Once you speak, people try to create controversies,” he said.

“But how can I say a fellow coach is not good? On what basis? I don’t know how he selects his players, his formations, or what goes into his tactics and backroom work. You can’t just jump to such conclusions.” Appiah went on to clarify the context of his comments.

“The question was about my view of the Nigerian team, and I said they have a very good side the defence is solid, the midfield is fantastic but up front, they sometimes struggle to score. Then I was asked how they could solve that, and I replied that if your defence and midfield are strong, then it comes down to the coach finding the right way to improve finishing.

“But what happened is that only a portion of my response was used, and that’s unfair to us as coaches,” he fumed while speaking to RG Sport.
