The Nigeria Premier League defending champions Rivers United started their campaign in the Super 6 playoff on a winning note with a victory over Sunshine Stars of Akure, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Super Eagles goalkeeper, Victor Sochima made a big save in the 43rd minute as the first half ended in a goalless affair.

The second stanza resumed with Pride of Rivers controlling the proceedings and pegged back the Akure Gunners.

Rivers United got a penalty in the 60th minute after Mark Gibson was brought down in the box.

Defender Ebube Duru beautifully converted the kick to give Rivers United a 1-0 win in their opening game. With the win, Rivers United are topping the Super 6 table with three points while waiting for the result of the Matchday 1 last game between Bendel Insurance and Lobi Stars.
