Super Eagles Climb Three Places In New FIFA Men’s World Ranking

Nigeria have climbed three places to 38th in the latest FIFA men’s world rankings released on Wednesday, a modest boost following a month that saw the Super Eagles contest two high-stakes fixtures, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The updated global standings, based on 149 international matches played since the previous ranking, reflect Nigeria’s 4–1 victory over Gabon and their 1–1 draw with DR Congo, which ended in a 4–3 penalty defeat in the African World Cup play-off. Despite the ultimate disappointment of failing to secure a spot at the 2026 World Cup, the results were enough to improve Nigeria’s position.

Nigeria now hold 1,502.46 ranking points, placing them fifth in Africa behind Morocco, Senegal, Egypt, and Algeria.

Morocco remain the continent’s top-ranked team with 1,713.12 points. Senegal are next on 1,648.07 in 19th place globally, followed by Egypt in 34th with 1,520.68 points. Algeria sit 35th on 1,516.37 points.

The regional standings underline how tightly contested the positions around Nigeria have become. The Super Eagles hold a slim margin over Tunisia, who occupy 40th place with 1,497.13 points. Further behind are Ivory Coast (1,489.59) and DR Congo (1,442.50), both still within striking distance.

At the top of the world rankings, Spain retain first place, with Argentina and France trailing closely. Brazil moved up two spots to fifth after a positive run of results, contributing to shifts in the mid-table positions.

For Nigeria, the rise offers a small consolation after their narrow World Cup exit. The decisive play-off in Rabat had begun brightly, with Frank Onyeka giving Nigeria an early lead before Elia Meschack’s equaliser forced a penalty shoot-out that ultimately ended their qualification hopes.

The timing of the ranking update carries added importance. With the Africa Cup of Nations scheduled for December in Morocco, the Super Eagles have a timely opportunity to further boost their standing. A strong performance at the continental tournament could push Nigeria higher up the global table.
