Super Eagles centre-back Kenneth Omeruo has criticised players in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), accusing them of lacking the competitiveness required to challenge for positions in the national team, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Speaking during an interview with Brila FM, Omeruo stated that most NPFL players invited to the Super Eagles camp do not fight for starting spots, but rather appear content to simply make up the numbers.

“Most of the players who come to the national team from the local leagues now, they just come to complete the team, to train. They don’t compete,” Omeruo lamented.

The former Chelsea defender emphasised the need for domestic league players to improve their mentality and quality if they want to earn regular national team roles, especially as competition for places continues to grow among foreign-based stars.

His remarks have sparked debate over the development of local talent and the level of professionalism in the NPFL.
