Super Eagles Legend Criticises Players’ Attitude Toward World Cup Qualification

Former Super Eagles defender Eric Ejiofor has criticised the current Nigerian squad, saying they lack the hunger and commitment required to secure a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Speaking on Brila FM, Ejiofor a member of Nigeria’s team at the 2002 World Cup expressed disappointment over the players’ mentality, insisting they have not shown the passion of a side determined to qualify.

“How do we want to qualify for the World Cup? We didn’t take our opportunities. When the chance becomes slim, we start hoping and praying,” Ejiofor said.

“From day one, we weren’t serious about it. I don’t think the players understand they’re fighting for a World Cup ticket. It’s sad because their attitude isn’t encouraging.”

Ejiofor noted that many of the current squad members have never appeared at a World Cup, yet their approach to the qualifiers has been casual.

 “This could have been their first tournament. I don’t know what they were thinking. Forget about the NFF’s issues as players, you must think about your future and career. Big contracts often come after the World Cup,” he added.

He also condemned the lack of professionalism in training camps.

“Look at how some players arrive on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday and only do two training sessions before a match. That’s not how football works. It’s a team sport, but we’re not playing as a team. I’ve already stopped hoping we’ll make it to the World Cup.”

With only two matches left in the qualifiers, Ejiofor questioned whether Nigeria could realistically win both, pointing to earlier missed chances that have left the team’s hopes hanging by a thread.
