Super Eagles Set For Defensive Reinforcement With Ajayi Recovery
By BSN Sports
Nigeria could receive a timely defensive reinforcement ahead of next month’s international window, with centre-back Semi Ajayi making steady progress in his recovery from injury, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
The 32-year-old has been sidelined since sustaining a hamstring injury during Nigeria’s third-place play-off against the Egypt national football team at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. The setback ruled him out of recent club fixtures and raised concerns over his availability for upcoming national team engagements.
Ajayi has featured 12 times in the English Championship this season, scoring once after joining Hull City A.F.C. on a free transfer following his departure from West Bromwich Albion F.C.
Nigeria are scheduled to participate in a Four-Nation Invitational Tournament in Amman, where they will face Iran, Costa Rica and hosts Jordan, making Ajayi’s recovery particularly significant for the Super Eagles’ defensive preparations.
Hull City manager Sergej Jakirovic has confirmed the defender has resumed individual training but is yet to return to full team sessions.
“Semi is going well, but again, not back in the team training just yet,” Jakirovic said. “He’s still doing some individual rehab.”
The update suggests Ajayi is edging closer to competitive fitness, offering encouragement to Nigeria’s technical crew as they finalise plans for the March fixtures.
Renowned for his aerial strength and organisational qualities, the former Arsenal academy player has been a consistent presence in recent Super Eagles squads. Hull City, currently fifth in the Championship and pushing for promotion, will also be closely monitoring his recovery during a crucial phase of the campaign.
