Super Eagles Stars Mourn Victims of Anthony Joshua Crash
By Our Reporter
Super Eagles players Victor Osimhen, Wilfred Ndidi and Bright Osayi-Samuel have expressed their condolences following a fatal road accident involving British-Nigerian boxing star Anthony Joshua in Makun, Ogun State, which claimed the lives of two people.
The crash occurred on Monday when a Lexus SUV carrying Joshua and two associates reportedly collided with a stationary truck along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. Joshua sustained minor injuries and was taken to a hospital in Lagos, while his companions, identified as Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele, died at the scene. Joshua’s promoters, Matchroom Boxing, later confirmed that the former heavyweight champion was in stable condition.
Speaking after Nigeria’s 3–1 victory over Uganda at the ongoing 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco on Tuesday, Victor Osimhen described the incident as heartbreaking and extended his sympathies to the bereaved families.
“It’s devastating news,” the striker said. “Anthony Joshua is one of the big celebrities who has put Nigeria on the map for many years. Something like this affects a lot of Nigerians. My condolences go to the families of those who lost their lives. Losing a life is never a good thing.”
Bright Osayi-Samuel also reacted to the incident, revealing that the news came as a shock to the Super Eagles squad.
“It wasn’t great, especially as it happened back home,” the Birmingham City defender said. “We’re thankful that he is okay, but it’s tragic that two of his friends lost their lives. We just hope he recovers well.”
Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi added that the team was deeply affected by the news and offered prayers for Joshua and the families of the victims.
“It was a difficult one,” Ndidi said. “When we heard about it, it was really sad. I wish him strength and also pray for the families of the people who passed away.”
The incident came just days after Joshua recorded a sixth-round knockout victory over YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul, continuing his return to winning form in the ring.
