Super Eagles To Test Strength Against Egypt 7 Days Before AFCON Kickoff

The Super Eagles of Nigeria are scheduled to face Egypt’s Pharaohs in an international friendly on December 14 in Cairo, as part of preparations for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) to be hosted by Morocco later in December, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

According to reports, the high-profile fixture will serve as a crucial tune-up match for both sides as they fine-tune their squads ahead of the continental showpiece.

The encounter will rekindle one of African football’s most storied rivalries. The two nations last met at the 2021 AFCON, held in Cameroon in early 2022, where Nigeria triumphed 1–0 thanks to a stunning strike from Kelechi Iheanacho in the group stage.

Both teams are among the tournament favourites for Morocco 2025, with Egypt chasing a record-extending eighth continental title, while Nigeria aim to capture their fourth.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is expected to open the Super Eagles’ pre-AFCON training camp on December 10, four days before the friendly in Cairo.

The match will allow head coach Eric Chelle to assess his players’ fitness and tactical readiness ahead of the tournament’s kickoff.

The friendly is also seen as an opportunity to test new tactical combinations and fine-tune the team’s attacking structure, with both nations eager to start their AFCON campaigns on a strong note.

Super Eagles are in Group C alongside Tanzania, Tunisia and Uganda. Hosts, Morocco will face Comoros in the tournament's kick off on 21st December 2025 while Nigeria kickoff their campaign against Tanzania on 23rd December.
