Super Falcons Defeat Cameroon in WAFCON Warm-Up Clash

Nine-time African champions Nigeria delivered a commanding response to their weekend defeat by overcoming Cameroon 3–1 in an international friendly at the Military Stadium in Yaoundé on Tuesday, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The victory came three days after Nigeria were edged out by a solitary goal in the first of the two-match series. This time, the Super Falcons displayed greater cohesion and attacking intent to reverse the outcome against the Indomitable Lionesses.

Head Coach Justin Madugu made seven changes to the starting line-up that featured in Saturday’s loss, reshaping the team in search of improved balance and urgency. However, Cameroon struck early once again, taking the lead in the seventh minute and briefly raising concerns of a repeat scenario.

Nigeria responded with renewed determination. Forward Chinwendu Ihezuo restored parity in the 32nd minute, rising above her marker to head home a well-delivered cross from Rinsola Babajide. The equaliser shifted momentum in Nigeria’s favour.

Babajide, instrumental in the first goal, completed the turnaround just before halftime. Following a scramble inside the penalty area, she reacted quickest to fire Nigeria ahead in the 43rd minute.

Madugu’s tactical adjustments were evident in midfield, where Nigeria pressed higher up the pitch, disrupted Cameroon’s build-up play, and forced the hosts into speculative long balls.

The Super Falcons extended their advantage in the 64th minute. Captain Rasheedat Ajibade surged down the right flank and delivered an inviting cross into the penalty area. Michelle Alozie met it with a powerful diving header to seal the victory.

Both sides are using the friendlies as preparation for the upcoming 14th edition of the Women Africa Cup of Nations, scheduled to take place in Morocco from 17 March to 3 April.

Nigeria’s response in Yaoundé will provide confidence and valuable lessons as they continue their build-up to the continental tournament.
