Super Falcons Return Home as CAF Yet to Confirm 2026 WAFCON Kickoff

Nigeria’s senior women’s national team, the Super Falcons, have returned to the country amid continued uncertainty surrounding the scheduling of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has yet to confirm whether the tournament will proceed as initially planned in Morocco. The competition, which also serves as Africa’s qualification pathway to the FIFA Women’s World Cup, was originally scheduled to take place from March 17 to April 3, 2026.

However, with less than two weeks to the proposed kickoff, there has been no official communication from CAF confirming the tournament dates. Key pre-tournament activities — including media accreditation, formal announcements, and clear indications of host nation readiness — have also not materialised.

The Super Falcons had initially planned to travel directly from Cameroon to Morocco following their two-legged international friendly matches. The trip was intended to mark the beginning of their official WAFCON training camp.

A source close to the team explained that the change in plans was prompted by the lack of clarity surrounding the tournament.

 “The initial plan was for the team to travel from Cameroon to Morocco for the official WAFCON camping. However, due to the uncertainty surrounding the tournament’s postponement, the team was instructed to return home after the match against Cameroon.

 “Had the team proceeded directly to Morocco for camping, Anderline and the other players would have joined the squad ahead of the coach’s final selection for the tournament.

 “Once it became clear that the team would return after the friendly against Cameroon, there was no justification for traveling with four goalkeepers for a friendly. It is therefore understood that some players were exempted, likely due to their other commitments."

As of press time, CAF has not issued an official statement clarifying the status of the tournament.
