Tauranga-Born Defender Sham Sataiya Chetty Continues Steady Rise In Football
By Admin
New Zealand-based defender Sham Sataiya Chetty continues to build his career through a mix of domestic development and overseas experience.
Born in Tauranga, Chetty came through the ranks at Hamilton Wanderers between 2018 and 2021 before stepping into senior football. He began his professional journey with Tauranga City United during the 2021–22 season, gaining valuable first-team experience early on.
A move to Manukau City followed in the 2022–23 campaign, where he continued his development and adapted further to the demands of senior competition.
In 2023, Chetty took his career abroad, signing with Portuguese side Atlético Clube Marinhense. The move marked an important phase in his development, exposing him to a different football environment and style of play.
“Playing in Portugal was a big step for me,” Chetty said. “It pushed me to improve and see the game from a different perspective.”
Now back in New Zealand, Chetty is continuing his career with Melville United AFC, bringing added experience from his time in Europe into the domestic game.
“Coming back home, I feel more confident and more aware of my role on the pitch,” he said. “The experience abroad helped me grow a lot as a player.”
Primarily operating as a right-back, Chetty combines defensive discipline with the ability to support attacking play when required.
“As a full-back, it’s important to balance both sides of the game,” he added. “Defending is the priority, but I also look to contribute going forward when the opportunity comes.”
With experience in both New Zealand and European football, Chetty is part of a growing group of players taking their development beyond domestic leagues and returning with broader exposure.
For now, his focus remains on consistency and continued improvement as he builds the next phase of his career back on home soil.
