Team Nigeria Among Best-Dressed Delegations As Glasgow 2026 Gets Underway

The 2026 Commonwealth Games officially opened in Glasgow on Thursday with a vibrant Opening Ceremony that celebrated Scotland's heritage, cultural diversity and innovation, while marking the start of the multi-sport event, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Among the highlights of the evening was Team Nigeria, whose green-and-white ceremonial attire attracted attention during the Parade of Nations. The delegation, dressed in outfits reflecting the country's national colours, received enthusiastic applause from spectators inside the OVO Hydro Arena and was widely noted for its appearance during the procession.

Athletes from 74 Commonwealth Games Associations took part in the Parade of Nations, which made history by featuring Para and non-Para athletes entering together for the first time at a Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony. Organisers described the move as a reflection of the Games' commitment to inclusion and equality.

The ceremony showcased Scotland's cultural identity through music, dance, digital storytelling and artistic performances highlighting Glasgow's industrial heritage and its recognition as a UNESCO City of Music. A colourful presentation of the King's Baton by participating nations further underscored the themes of unity, diversity and friendship across the Commonwealth.

King Charles III and Queen Camilla made a ceremonial entrance inspired by the iconic British television series Doctor Who, with the monarch later declaring the 23rd Commonwealth Games officially open. In his address, King Charles welcomed athletes and officials to Glasgow and encouraged participants to celebrate excellence, friendship and the unifying power of sport.

The royal appearance also evoked memories of Queen Elizabeth II's memorable role in the London 2012 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony alongside actor Daniel Craig, a moment that remains one of the most iconic in modern sporting history.

With the Opening Ceremony concluded, attention now shifts to the sporting competition as athletes from across the Commonwealth begin their quest for medals over the coming days.
