Team Nigeria Athletes Hail World-Class Commonwealth Games Camp in Aberdeen

Team Nigeria's preparations for the 2026 Commonwealth Games have received a major boost, with national hammer throw coach Gabriel Opuana describing the training camp in Aberdeen, Scotland, as the best he has experienced in decades of international competition, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

With the Games set to begin in Glasgow on 23 July, athletes are putting the finishing touches to their preparations in an environment widely praised for its quality, organisation and athlete-focused approach.

Speaking from the camp, Opuana said the National Sports Commission (NSC) had created ideal conditions for the country's athletes to perform at their best.

"For a long time in our history of preparations for international competitions, we have never had it so good," Opuana said.

The veteran coach highlighted the high standard of accommodation, training facilities and welfare arrangements, noting that the camp has been free of the logistical challenges that have often affected previous national team preparations.

"The accommodation and training facilities are excellent, the food is good and, so far, we haven't had any of those usual issues we normally have in camp," he added.

Athletes have been training in a calm and professional environment, supported by coaches, medical personnel and technical staff working to ensure every competitor is fully prepared ahead of the Games.

Opuana also praised the NSC for prioritising athletes' welfare, revealing that competitors have received their competition kits and daily allowances as scheduled.

He singled out former Nigerian long jump star Yusuf Alli for his commitment to the team, describing his presence in camp as invaluable.

"We are happy to have Yusuf Alli around. He is always available to provide everything that is needed. The NSC has done a job we must commend them," Opuana said.

Away from training, athletes and officials have also benefited from familiar Nigerian meals throughout their stay, a gesture that has helped maintain morale and provide a sense of home during the final phase of preparations.

In another positive development, Opuana disclosed that the entire squad is injury-free, raising optimism that Team Nigeria can mount a strong challenge when competition begins.

While commending the NSC for providing excellent preparation, the experienced coach stressed that the focus must now shift to delivering results on the field of play.

He also urged Nigerians to support the team throughout the Games, expressing confidence that nationwide encouragement would inspire the athletes to achieve success.

Nigeria heads into the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games aiming to improve on its impressive performance at Birmingham 2022, where Team Nigeria won 35 medals, including 12 gold.

The NSC has now set an ambitious target of 20 gold medals as the country seeks one of its most successful Commonwealth Games campaigns when competition runs from 23 July to 4 August.
