Team Nigeria Gets Presidential Send-Off Ahead of Commonwealth Games

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will on Thursday officially bid farewell to Team Nigeria ahead of the country's participation in the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The send-off ceremony will take place at the Presidential Villa in Abuja before the Nigerian contingent departs for the United Kingdom to begin the final phase of preparations for the Games.

According to the National Sports Commission (NSC), President Tinubu is expected to address the athletes and officials, urging them to represent the country with distinction and uphold Nigeria's sporting tradition on the international stage.

Nigeria heads into the Games aiming to build on its performance at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, where it finished as the highest-ranked African nation after winning 35 medals—12 gold, nine silver and 14 bronze.

Team Nigeria has been training in Abuja ahead of the competition and is scheduled to depart on Friday for Aberdeen, Scotland, where the athletes will undertake a three-week training camp before moving to Glasgow for the Games.

The country will be represented by a contingent of 74 athletes competing across 10 sports.

The 2026 Commonwealth Games will be held from July 23 to August 2, bringing together athletes from Commonwealth nations to compete across a range of sporting events.

The NSC said the presidential send-off underscores the Federal Government's continued support for Team Nigeria as the athletes prepare to compete for honours in Glasgow.
