Team Nigeria Receives Major Boost As Amusan Arrives in Aberdeen

World record holder Tobi Amusan has arrived at Team Nigeria's training camp in Aberdeen, Scotland, as the country's preparations for the 2026 Commonwealth Games gather momentum ahead of the competition in Glasgow, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The reigning Commonwealth Games women's 100m hurdles champion links up with the Nigerian contingent after an impressive Diamond League campaign that has already secured her qualification for the season-ending Diamond League Final in Brussels, Belgium, with four meetings still to be contested.

Amusan is expected to spearhead Nigeria's medal challenge in Glasgow as she bids to win a third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal in the women's 100m hurdles, having claimed the title at the 2018 and 2022 editions.

The 29-year-old has maintained her impressive form this season, successfully defending her African title in Ghana and posting a season's best of 12.28 seconds on three occasions.

She will begin the competition as one of the favourites for gold in a field that includes Jamaica's Megan Simmonds and Kerrica Hill, South Africa's Marione Fourie, England's Emma Nwofor, Barbados' Adeyah Brewster and Maya Rollins, Canada's Mariam Abdul-Rashid and Tatiana Aholou, Ghana's Evonne Britton, Kenya's Rukia Nusra Omulisia and Australia's Michelle Jenneke.

Team Nigeria opened its pre-Games training camp in Aberdeen last week, with athletes undergoing final preparations at the Aberdeen Sports Village ahead of the start of competition.

Meanwhile, Nigeria's medal ambitions have suffered a setback following the withdrawal of long jump star Ese Brume through injury.

Brume has been ruled out of the Games, ending her hopes of defending the Commonwealth title she won at the previous edition, where she set a Games record of 7.00 metres.

In her absence, Ruth Usoro has been drafted into the squad and will compete alongside Prestina Ochonogor in the women's long jump as Team Nigeria seeks to maintain its strong tradition in the event.
