Team Nigeria delivered a stellar performance at the 2025 ANOCA Zone III Games on Wednesday, clinching two gold medals in the men’s and women’s doubles badminton events, highlighting the country's growing dominance in the sport across the region, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

In the men’s doubles, the Nigerian pair of Joseph Abel and Shehu Aliyu showcased tactical precision and athletic superiority, cruising through the tournament without dropping a single game. Their campaign included a flawless 2-0 victory in the Round of 16, a 2-0 triumph over Benin Republic in the quarterfinals, a similar 2-0 result against hosts Burkina Faso in the semi-finals, and a final masterclass against Togo, sealed again with a 2-0 scoreline.

The women’s doubles mirrored the success of their male counterparts, with Dorcas Adesokan and Deborah Uchechukwu commanding every match from start to finish. The duo swept past Togo and Burkina Faso on their way to the final, where they comfortably dispatched Benin Republic in straight sets (2-0), capping off a dominant campaign.

Head coach Ismaila Muhammed praised the players for their composure and consistency, noting that the competition provided valuable match experience ahead of upcoming international qualifiers and tournaments.

“The tournament has given our athletes critical exposure and competition time. This is essential in keeping them sharp and ready for the challenges ahead,” he said.

Team Nigeria will aim to build on Wednesday’s momentum as the badminton events continue on Thursday, with men’s singles, women’s singles, mixed doubles, and the men’s and women’s team events still to come.
