Team Nigeria Targets Strong Showing At Commonwealth Fencing Championships in Lagos

Team Nigeria says it is fully focused on delivering an impressive performance at the Commonwealth Fencing championship as the tournament takes place in Lagos from August 9 to 14, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Leading the country's campaign are two promising young fencers, Adebodunri Thomas and Alex Chizim Aninyei, who announced themselves on the continental stage at the 2025 African Championships and are now preparing for one of the biggest competitions of their careers.

Seventeen-year-old Thomas, Nigeria's top-ranked female épée fencer, believes the championships will present a higher level of competition but is confident in her preparation.

"I have very high expectations, and I know it's going to be really challenging. This won't be like the African Championships," she said. "I hope to reach the last 16 again, as I did at the Junior African Championships. More importantly, competing against some of the world's top athletes is a great opportunity. I've trained every day since returning from school, working with my coach on new techniques, and I'm eager to put them into practice."

Nineteen-year-old Aninyei is equally motivated by the opportunity to compete before a home crowd and measure himself against elite international opponents.

"It's a wonderful opportunity to represent Nigeria," he said. "I look forward to competing against fencers from around the world, gaining valuable experience, and testing the skills I've developed over the years. My goal is to qualify from the pools, reach the direct elimination rounds, and ultimately win a medal."

National coach Ibrahim Alogba expressed confidence in the team's preparations, describing the tournament as an important benchmark for the continued growth of fencing in Nigeria.

"We're very ready, and we still have time to prepare further," Alogba said. "The Commonwealth Championships are a major event, but this team is stronger and more united than before. The chemistry we've built and the exposure we've gained from competing in world-class tournaments give us confidence that we can challenge for medals."

Hosting the Commonwealth Fencing Federation Championships represents another significant milestone for Nigerian fencing, providing local athletes with the rare opportunity to compete against some of the Commonwealth's best on home soil.

As anticipation builds ahead of the Lagos showpiece, Team Nigeria will be aiming not only to capitalize on home advantage but also to underline the country's growing reputation in international fencing with a memorable performance.
