Nigerian non-league footballer Saburi Olayinka Adeniji, widely known as Sabiru Adeniji, has died in the United Kingdom after suffering a severe brain injury, prompting an outpouring of tributes from teammates, supporters, and the wider football community, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Adeniji, a winger at Kings Park Rangers FC in Halstead, Essex, passed away in hospital on Friday. He had been admitted to intensive care on January 25 after sustaining a serious brain stem injury.

In a particularly tragic turn, his wife and four-year-old daughter had travelled from Nigeria to be by his side but arrived one day after his death.

Confirming the news, Kings Park Rangers released a heartfelt statement paying tribute to the footballer’s courage and character.

“It is with great sadness that we must announce our number 17, Saburi Adeniji ‘Ola’, passed away yesterday morning,” the club said. “He fought so hard to still be here for when his family arrived. His wife and daughter unfortunately arrived this morning, a day late. He will always be a King. He will always be loved.”

Adeniji’s death has deeply affected those who knew him, with many remembering him not only for his commitment on the pitch but also for his resilience and spirit off it.
