 Tension, Disagreements Rock CAF Leadership As Motsepe Not Happy About Disciplinary Committe Decisions

Tension and internal disagreements have overshadowed preparations for the Confederation of African Football (CAF) emergency Executive Committee meeting scheduled for February 12 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Members of the Executive Committee are set to travel to Tanzania without prior knowledge of the meeting’s agenda, following the decision of CAF Secretary-General, Veron Omba, to withhold the document over fears of leaks. 

The move comes amid growing internal crises within CAF, marked by confusion, administrative challenges, and alleged interference in decision-making processes.

A senior executive member disclosed that the atmosphere within CAF has become increasingly heated, with strained relationships among key officials. 

The situation reportedly deteriorated further after the last Executive Committee meeting in Rabat, Morocco, where tensions flared between several members over sensitive filesand the general management structure of the organisation.

The meeting is expected to deliberate on bids submitted by member federations to host future editions of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). CAF had set February 1 as the deadline for bids to host the 2028, 2032, and 2036 tournaments. 

For the 2028 edition, only three bids were received: a joint bid from South Africa and Botswana, as well as separate bids from Ethiopia and Guinea. 

Egypt is among the countries reported to have submitted bids for the 2032 or 2036 editions.

Sources close to CAF President Patrice Motsepe revealed that he will present proposed amendments to the Disciplinary Committee’s regulations at the Dar es Salaam meeting. 

This follows his public dissatisfaction with the committee’s decisions concerning the incidents during the AFCON final between Morocco and Senegal, where he argued that the existing disciplinary framework does not adequately reflect the scale of the challenges and crises currently facing African football.

The upcoming meeting is therefore expected to be pivotal, not only for AFCON hosting decisions, but also for the future governance and disciplinary structure of CAF.
