Tinubu Backs Super Falcons’ Title Defence as NSC, NFF Create Seven-man Welfare Committee

The National Sports Commission (NSC), in partnership with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), has constituted a seven-member Welfare Committee to support the Super Falcons as they prepare to defend their title at the upcoming Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The decision was reached following a meeting between the Director-General of the NSC, Bukola Olopade, and the General Secretary of the NFF, Dr Mohammed Sanusi, in Abuja on Wednesday.

NFF Executive Committee member Aisha Falode will chair the committee, while Ruth David has been appointed secretary. Other members include Rt. Hon. Margaret Icheen, Babagana Kalli, Emeka Iyama, Aderonke Tinuoye and Tobechukwu Oluchi.

Speaking on the initiative, Olopade said the Federal Government remains committed to ensuring a smooth and successful campaign for the nine-time African champions, with particular emphasis on players’ welfare and administrative support.

According to him, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu are personally invested in the team’s quest to retain the continental title in Morocco.

“The President and the First Lady are committed to seeing the Super Falcons successfully defend their title. This committee has therefore been established to work alongside the NFF in ensuring a seamless campaign for the team,” Olopade said.

He stressed that player welfare remains a critical factor in achieving success at major competitions.

“Welfare is a non-negotiable aspect of any successful team. With this committee in place, the players can be assured that both the NSC and the NFF are taking their welfare seriously throughout the WAFCON campaign,” he added.

NFF General Secretary, Dr Mohammed Sanusi, described the development as a landmark initiative, noting that it is the first time a welfare committee has been created specifically for the senior women’s national team ahead of a major tournament.

He said the move reflects the growing commitment of both the NSC and the NFF to the development of women’s football in Nigeria.

“For us at the NFF, this demonstrates the importance the NSC attaches to women’s football. It is a significant step that will further accelerate the growth of the women’s game in the country,” Sanusi said.

He clarified that the committee’s role is not to assume the responsibilities of existing officials but to provide additional support aimed at ensuring a hitch-free tournament for the Super Falcons.

Nigeria will head to Morocco seeking to extend its dominance of African women’s football by successfully defending the WAFCON title.
