President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has spoken by telephone with Nigerian-British boxing star Anthony Joshua following a tragic road accident in Ogun State that left the former heavyweight champion injured and claimed the lives of two of his associates, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

According to the Presidency, the President personally conveyed his condolences to Joshua and expressed sorrow over the loss of his associates. He also wished the boxer a quick recovery and offered prayers for his wellbeing. Joshua, in response, assured the President that he was receiving adequate medical care.

President Tinubu also reached out to Joshua’s mother to express his sympathy and pray with her. She reportedly appreciated the President’s gesture and support during the difficult moment.

In addition, the President spoke with Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, who was at the hospital with Joshua and his family. Governor Abiodun assured the President that all necessary measures were being taken to ensure Joshua receives the best possible medical attention.

Earlier, President Tinubu, who is currently outside the country, had expressed his sympathy in a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), describing the incident as deeply painful.

“I sympathise with you and your family as you bear the emotional weight of this unfortunate incident,” the President said. “As a sportsman, you have always shown courage, discipline, and unwavering love for our country. These qualities have made you a source of national pride.”

He added that moments of tragedy call for unity and mutual support, while offering prayers for strength and healing for Joshua, as well as eternal rest for the deceased.

The accident occurred on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State.

The statement was signed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, and dated December 29, 2025.
