Chibuike Nwaiwu has expressed pride in fulfilling a long-held ambition of representing Nigeria, revealing that he always believed he would earn a call-up to the Super Eagles during his time in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The 22-year-old defender, currently with Trabzonspor, made his senior international debut in Nigeria’s 2–1 victory over Iran in a friendly match played in Antalya, Turkey. Nwaiwu was drafted into the squad as a late replacement for the injured Calvin Bassey.

Introduced early in the second half in place of Igoh Ogbu, the former Heartland FC and Enyimba FC defender marked his debut with a composed performance as the Super Eagles secured the win. Goals from Moses Simon and Akor Adams ensured victory for Nigeria.

Reflecting on his first appearance, Nwaiwu described the moment as the realization of a lifelong dream.

“It is a privilege to represent my country because every footballer aspires to do so,” he said. “I am very happy to make my debut and proud to wear the national team shirt.”

He credited his rise to faith and persistence, noting that his ambition to play for Nigeria dates back to his NPFL days.

“I believe in God and in hard work. Even when I was playing in the NPFL, I always said I would represent my country. When I received the call-up at my club, I was excited—it was a great moment for me,” he added.

Nwaiwu also revealed that his excitement nearly caused him to miss his flight after receiving the news, describing the invitation as a defining milestone in his career.

Commenting on the opposition, he acknowledged Iran’s pedigree on the international stage.

“Iran are a very good side and regular World Cup participants. We took our chances and did a great job,” he said.
