The football community in Nasarawa State has been thrown into mourning following the sudden death of Habibu Aliyu Ozeze, a former player of Kogi United F.C, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
Habibu collapsed during a seven-a-side Ramadan football match in Shabu, a suburb of Lafia, on Sunday. Eyewitnesses said the incident occurred as his team prepared to take a free kick. The midfielder reportedly stepped back to deliver a pass when he suddenly slumped to the ground without any physical contact from an opponent.
He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital but was confirmed dead on arrival.
Confirming the incident, the team’s coach, Suleiman Ibrahim, said the collapse came without warning.
“The deceased’s side had just been awarded a free kick,” Ibrahim explained. “As Habibu stepped back to strike the ball, he suddenly slumped without any contact. He was taken to the hospital, where he was confirmed dead before arrival.”
Described by teammates and associates as disciplined and dedicated, Habibu previously featured for several clubs, most notably Kogi United in the Nigeria National League. He also served as captain of Heartland FC of Shabu, where he was widely respected for his leadership and commitment to the game.
His passing represents a significant loss to both grassroots and professional football in the state, with tributes pouring in from teammates, fans and stakeholders across the local football community.
Habibu has since been laid to rest in accordance with Islamic rites.
