A wave of grief has swept through the football communities in Nigeria and Italy following the death of Emmanuel King Okoye, who passed away at the age of 25 after collapsing during a match, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Okoye, a midfielder born in 2000, was in Nigeria visiting family when the incident occurred on Wednesday. According to reports from Italian outlet Notiziario del Calcio and local authorities in Canicattini, he suffered a severe head injury following a collision on the pitch, leading to his sudden collapse.

Emergency responders were said to have acted swiftly, providing immediate medical assistance before transferring him to a hospital. Despite efforts to stabilise him, he was later pronounced dead.

The tragedy has been deeply felt in Italy, where Okoye spent much of his playing career featuring for several amateur clubs, including ASD Acri and US Palmese, among others.

In a statement, Pol.D. Città di Canicattini Calcio paid tribute to the late player, describing him as dedicated and passionate about the game. The club recalled his time with them during the 2018–2019 season and expressed condolences to his family, highlighting his character and the memories he left behind both on and off the pitch.

Okoye’s passing comes shortly after another football-related tragedy involving Michael Eneramo, a former Super Eagles striker, who also died after collapsing during a local friendly match in Kaduna.

The back-to-back incidents have reignited concerns over player safety and emergency medical preparedness in football at all levels. Okoye is remembered by teammates and clubs as a committed professional whose career, though largely at the grassroots level, reflected a deep love for the sport.
