Rising Nigerian talent Elisha Sowunmi has taken a major step in his football career by signing his first professional contract with Premier League side West Ham United, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

In an official statement released on Monday, the club announced: "West Ham United is delighted to announce that Academy forward Elisha Sowunmi has signed his first professional contract with the Club."

The 17-year-old, who has been part of the Hammers’ youth setup since the Under-9 level, signed the contract in the presence of his parents at the club’s Chadwell Heath training ground his football home for the past 12 years.

Sowunmi began his journey at grassroots level with Chingford-based Ryan FC before joining West Ham’s Academy.

He signed a full-time scholarship with the club in 2023 and quickly made a name for himself with the U18 side.

Following a solid debut season, Sowunmi emerged as a standout performer during the 2024/25 campaign.

A versatile attacker capable of playing across the front line, he ended the season as the U18s' top scorer with 16 goals and five assists across all competitions.

His impressive tally included two hat-tricks — one notably coming in a win over Aston Villa, the reigning FA Youth Cup and U18 Premier League champions.

The future looks bright for the young Nigerian as he begins the next chapter of his football journey.
