Transfer Update: D’Tigress Star Musa Parts Ways With Phoenix Mercury
Sampson Adedeji
Nigerian basketball standout and D’Tigress regular, Murjanatu Musa, has been released by WNBA side Phoenix Mercury to make room for the return of veteran forward DeWanna Bonner, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
Musa joined the Mercury earlier this year from French Ligue Féminine team Tarbes Gespe Bigorre, embarking on her first stint in the WNBA.
However, her rookie season has been cut short due to injury setbacks and roster limitations. With the Mercury needing to finalize their 12-player roster ahead of the July 13 deadline, the franchise opted to waive Musa to accommodate Bonner a five-time WNBA All-Star and former champion rejoining the team.
According to the WNBA's official transactions page, Musa was one of six players signed to unprotected contracts, making her eligible for release without financial obligations.
The Nigerian centre made her WNBA debut on May 22 in Phoenix’s narrow 89–86 victory over the Los Angeles Sparks and featured in 12 games during the 2025 season.
