Transfer Update: Espérance, Kaizer Chiefs At Loggerheads Over Nigerian Striker
Sampson Adedeji
Tunisian heavyweights Espérance de Tunis, South African giants Kaizer Chiefs, and Libyan powerhouse Al-Ittihad are reportedly locked in a three-way battle to sign fast-rising Nigerian striker Clement Ikenna, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
Ikenna, 23, last featured for Levski Sofia in the Bulgarian First League, where he impressed with his pace, strength, and eye for goal.
Sources close to the player reveal that several clubs across Africa and Europe have been tracking him following a breakthrough season that saw him register eight goals and five assists in all competitions.
Espérance are believed to have made the first move, tabling an offer to bring forward to Tunisia as part of their squad revamp ahead of the CAF Champions League.
However, Kaizer Chiefs have also stepped up their pursuit, with the Amakhosi keen to bolster their attack after an inconsistent start to the South African Premier Soccer League campaign.
Al-Ittihad of Libya have not been left out of the race, reportedly holding advanced discussions with the player’s representatives.
The Tripoli-based side views Ikenna as a marquee signing who can strengthen their quest for domestic dominance and continental success.
A source familiar with the negotiations hinted that the player’s camp is weighing the financial packages, playing opportunities, and long-term career prospects presented by each suitor.
“Clement wants a club where he can grow and compete at the highest level. All three teams are serious, but the decision will depend on sporting ambition as much as the financial terms,” the source said.
Ikenna, a product of the Flying Eagles youth system, has already been tipped as a future Super Eagles star.
His next move is expected to play a key role in his development and chances of breaking into Nigeria’s senior national team setup.
With the transfer window in several African leagues still open, the race for Clement Ikenna’s signature is heating up, and an announcement could be made in the coming days.
