Transfer Update: Nigerian-Born Defender Signs For San Diego FC

Major League Soccer expansion side San Diego FC (SDFC) have confirmed the signing of Nigerian-born defender Leo Duru on loan from English Championship outfit Blackburn Rovers, with an option for a permanent deal running until June 2026, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Duru, a product of the Blackburn Rovers Academy, featured 74 times at youth level, contributing three goals and nine assists across U-18 and U-21 competitions. 

He broke into the senior team with a debut in a Championship clash against Burnley and went on to make three senior appearances for Rovers.

Earlier this year, the 20-year-old gained valuable first-team experience during a loan spell with League Two side Barrow AFC, where he notched eight appearances and one goal.

Born in Manchester, England, Duru remains eligible to represent Nigeria and the United States internationally. 

He has already earned four caps for the U.S. U-20 team, making his debut in a 2024 friendly against Chile.

SDFC expressed delight at securing the versatile defender, stating:

 “We’re happy to welcome Leo to San Diego. He’s a player we’ve monitored for many months a defender with outstanding physical qualities who can also play further forward".
