Chuba Akpom, eligible to play for Nigeria's Super Eagles, is on the brink of returning to the English Championship, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The forward, who made a move from Middlesbrough to Ajax Amsterdam a few seasons ago following a standout campaign at Riverside, has struggled to secure a consistent place in Ajax's first team since arriving at the Amsterdam Arena.

However, Sunderland has made significant progress in negotiations with Ajax and is nearing an agreement to bring Akpom to the Stadium of Light. The deal is expected to be finalized soon.
