Tunisia Top Group C After Uganda Win, Set For Super Eagles Showdown

Tunisia moved to the top of Group C at the 2025 CAF Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco following a commanding 3–1 victory over Uganda on Tuesday night in Fez, setting up a high-stakes clash with Super Eagles, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The Carthage Eagles made an emphatic start to their tournament campaign at the Annex Olympic Stadium of the Prince Moulay Abdellah Sports Complex, asserting control early and maintaining dominance throughout the contest.

Tunisia opened the scoring in the 10th minute when midfielder Elyes Skhiri capped a slick team move with a composed finish. The North Africans continued to dictate the tempo and doubled their advantage five minutes before the interval, as Elias Achouri showed calmness inside the area to slot home in the 40th minute.

Samy Trabelsi’s side resumed the second half with the same intensity, remaining well organised and disciplined. Their superiority was rewarded again in the 64th minute when Achouri completed his brace with a clinical strike to effectively seal the outcome.

Uganda managed a consolation goal deep into stoppage time through Denis Omedi, who capitalised on a rare lapse in concentration by the Tunisian defence. The late goal, however, did little to alter the overall complexion of the match.

Earlier in the day, Super Eagles secured a hard-fought 2–1 victory over Tanzania in the group’s opening fixture. Goals from Semi Ajayi and Ademola Lookman ensured a winning start for the three-time African champions, while Charles M’Bombwa scored Tanzania’s lone goal shortly after the break.

Nigeria controlled much of the first half and took the lead nine minutes before halftime when Ajayi powered in a header from an Alex Iwobi corner. The delivery followed a goal-line clearance by Tanzanian defender Bakari Mwamnyeto, who had denied Victor Osimhen moments earlier.

The second half began at a frantic pace. Nigeria briefly thought they had doubled their lead when Osimhen found the net with a backheel finish, but the effort was ruled out for offside after a VAR review. Tanzania quickly took advantage, with Novatus Dismas threading a precise pass through the defence for M’Bombwa to equalise with a calm finish past Stanley Nwabali.

Nigeria responded almost immediately, as Lookman produced a moment of brilliance by curling an unstoppable shot from the edge of the area to restore the Super Eagles’ lead and halt Tanzania’s momentum.

Following the opening round of matches, Tunisia lead Group C with three points and a superior goal difference, while Nigeria sit second on the same number of points. Tanzania and Uganda occupy third and fourth positions respectively.

Attention now turns to the top-of-the-table encounter between Nigeria and Tunisia scheduled for 27 December, a match expected to have a major bearing on the group’s final standings. On the same day, Uganda and Tanzania will face each other in a crucial fixture as both sides look to revive their tournament hopes.
