Two-time African Champions Ends Playing Career After Years of Service to Nigerian Football

Former Super Falcons goalkeeper Christy Ohiaeriaku has announced her retirement from professional football, bringing an end to a career that included multiple international appearances and continental success, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Ohiaeriaku, a two-time winner of the Africa Women's Cup of Nations (WAFCON), confirmed her decision in a statement shared on social media, where she reflected on her journey in the sport.

“The boots are hung, but the legacy lives on. Thank you for the memories,” she wrote.

The 29-year-old shot-stopper represented Nigeria at the senior level and was part of the squad for the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup, where she served as one of the team’s goalkeepers. She also featured in Nigeria’s campaign at the 2016 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup.

At club level, Ohiaeriaku began her career with Osun Babes, where she established herself as the first-choice goalkeeper during the early years of the Nigeria Women Premier League. She later moved to Rivers Angels before returning to Osun Babes in 2016.

Her career also included a stint in Europe, having joined Swedish side IFK Östersund on a one-year contract in 2016.

In a more detailed reflection on her retirement, Ohiaeriaku described her football journey as one marked by passion, resilience, and personal growth. She revealed that a period away from the game—initially intended as a temporary break—ultimately led her to reassess her priorities.

“I once lived and breathed football, giving everything each time I stepped onto the pitch,” she said. “Taking a break was not easy, but I believed it would help me return stronger. However, as time passed, my priorities evolved, and I came to understand that it was time to step away.”

She added that her decision to retire was not driven by disappointment but by self-awareness and acceptance.

“Though I may no longer play competitively, football will always remain a part of my story—a chapter defined by courage, resilience, and love for the game.”

Ohiaeriaku’s retirement marks the close of a notable chapter in Nigerian women’s football, with her contributions at both club and international level leaving a lasting imprint.
