The 2023 U17 African Cup of Nations kick-off on Saturday in Algeria but the first toughest game of the competition was played on Sunday between Nigeria's Golden Eaglets and Junior Chipolopolo of Zambia, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
Nigeria's Golden Eaglets laboured hard to beat Zambia 1-0 in the second half of the game.
Playing in Constantine, the five-time World champions dominated the first period but the Zambian team frustrated all their efforts, denying them access to the goal.
Both sides hit the crossbar but Nigerians proved to be the better side as the half ended in a goalless draw.
The second half resumed with the Nigeria side still dominating the proceedings but the Zambia forwards were also posing a big threat to the Nigeria defense.
Favour Daniel put Nigeria ahead in the 77th minute after the Zambians failed to clear their line from a goal-mouth scramble.
The Nigeria side has the opportunity to put the game to rest in the 90th minute when they were awarded a penalty but they failed to convert the kick and the game ended 1-0. Golden Eaglets will face South Africa and Morocco in their last two group matches.
