Sampson Adedeji
South Africa-born, Nigerian descent Michael Dokunmu has revealed the reason he dumped representing Nigeria for South Africa, BSNSports.com.ng report.
The youngster was born in Kimberly, South Africa to Nigerian parents and decided to represent his country of birth ahead of his origin.
The head coach of the Amajimbos Crowie Duncan named the Dutch-based star among his 21-man team for the U17 African Cup of Nations in Algeria.
While speaking to BBC Correspondent Shina Okeleji, the Vittese Arnhem player said he feels more of South Africa than Nigeria.
"I chose South Africa because it’s my birthplace. I am more comfortable playing for my birthplace because I love South Africa and it was one of my dreams and goals to get called up.
And from here the U20s and gradually going on to make my debut for Bafana.
I am looking forward to playing against Morocco and also Nigeria (at AFCON U17), that’s going to be something, but I am really hungry to play against them. I am confident in my team and also myself", he said.
Dokunmu will get to face Nigeria in Algeria as both countries are in the same group.
