Uganda Sets Sights on FIFA World Cup with Stadium Expansion Plans

Uganda has taken a significant step toward positioning itself as a future host of the FIFA World Cup, with senior government officials confirming that the country is considering a formal bid in the coming years, BSN Sports.com.ng reports.

The disclosure was made by Dr. Kedrace Turyagyenda, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education and Sports, during an appearance before Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC). The session was convened to examine the December 2025 Auditor General’s report, but discussions expanded to include Uganda’s long-term sports infrastructure strategy and global hosting ambitions.

Dr. Turyagyenda indicated that the government’s ongoing investment in stadium development forms a central pillar of the proposed plan. According to her, Uganda is prioritizing facilities that meet international standards, including venues with seating capacities exceeding 45,000.

She noted that the country’s infrastructure drive is not only aimed at delivering upcoming continental tournaments but also at laying the groundwork for larger global competitions.

Uganda is set to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), a milestone widely viewed as a springboard for further ambitions on the world stage. Officials believe that successfully staging the continental tournament will strengthen the country’s credentials for a future World Cup bid.

“The next bid is in 2031 for the World Cup, and I think we are already thinking about it because we are now going to have at least three stadia that we believe can be considered,” Dr. Turyagyenda told lawmakers.

While no formal bid has yet been submitted, the government’s remarks underscore a broader vision to transform Uganda into a competitive destination for major international sporting events.
