VP Commends NBF President Over Nigeria's Hosting Rights For LA 2028 Olympic Boxing Qualifier

The Nigeria Boxing Federation (NBF) has received provisional approval to host the African Continental Boxing Qualification Tournament for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, marking another significant milestone in the country's quest to establish itself as a leading destination for international boxing competitions, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The provisional approval was granted on July 30, 2026, following a competitive bidding process involving several countries. Although multiple nations submitted bids to host the prestigious qualification tournament, the identities and number of the competing bidders have not been disclosed by the relevant authorities in order to preserve the integrity and confidentiality of the selection process.

The Vice President of Nigeria Boxing Federation, Omolei Imadu, hailed the president of the Federation, Wale Edun, for his contribution to getting the hosting rights.

"Kudos to the NBF President and many others who made this hosting rights possible for Nigeria." The Vice president said.

The Velodrome at the MKO Abiola National Stadium in Abuja has been proposed as the venue for the championship. However, the hosting rights remain subject to final confirmation, with the Nigeria Boxing Federation expected to submit the remaining requirements, including an official letter of government support and other supporting documents, before the bid is formally ratified.

If confirmed, the event will bring some of Africa's finest boxers to Abuja as they compete for qualification slots to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, further elevating Nigeria's reputation as a capable host of major international sporting events. The hosting rights also guaranteed six Nigerian boxers automatic qualification for the 2028 Olympics.

Speaking on the development of boxing in the country, the leadership of the Nigeria Boxing Federation highlighted the contributions of its President, whose commitment to the sport has continued to drive reforms and grassroots development.

"Through his monthly initiatives under the Lagos State Hall of Fame platform, the NBF President has consistently promoted youth empowerment and talent development while supporting ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening governance, improving regulations, and repositioning boxing in Nigeria for sustained growth."

The federation believes that hosting the continental Olympic qualifier would not only showcase Nigeria's organisational capacity but also provide a major boost to boxing development across the country and the African continent.
