Victorious Homecoming: Nigerian Flag Football Teams Land in Abuja with Gold

 Nigeria's men’s and women’s flag football teams received a hero’s welcome on their return to the country after emerging champions at the 2025 African Flag Football Championship, held in Egypt, BSNSports.com.ng reports. 

The teams arrived at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja at 2:30 p.m. and were greeted by officials from the National Sports Commission, media personnel, and jubilant supporters.

Both teams claimed gold in their respective categories at the continental tournament, securing qualification for the upcoming Flag Football World Cup. Their victory marks a historic achievement as Nigeria becomes the first nation to win both titles at the championship.

Team Nigeria’s captain, Obinna Uzor, expressed pride in the team's achievement and appreciation for the host country. “Egypt is a beautiful place and hosted a wonderful event. We went there, conquered, and made history by becoming the first to win the title,” said Uzor. “Nigerians can expect our best at the Olympics and the World Cup. We’re looking forward to dominating on the global stage.”

Bello Anuoluwapo, a member of the women’s team, described the experience as thrilling and a significant milestone for the sport in Nigeria.

 “It was an exciting moment for the ladies,” she said. “Flag football is still growing in Nigeria, but our aim was to win—and we did. We promise to make all of Africa proud at the Olympics and the World Cup.”

The championship victory is being hailed as a major boost for flag football’s development in Nigeria and across the continent, as the sport gains momentum ahead of its debut as a demonstration event at the upcoming Olympics.
