Violence Erupts As Ekiti Queens Supporters Invade Pitch, Assault Referees After 1–0 Defeat

Match officials who handled the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Matchday 3 clash between Ekiti Queens and Edo Queens were subjected to a traumatic ordeal after the home side fell to a 1–0 defeat in Ado-Ekiti, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Edo Queens forward Atume Doosuur scored the decisive goal, her second of the season, with a well-placed header in the 65th minute, leaving the Ekiti Queens goalkeeper with no chance.

However, the atmosphere turned violent moments after the final whistle. A section of Ekiti Queens supporters stormed the pitch, pelting match officials with stones and empty water bottles before security personnel were able to intervene and escort them to safety.

Videos circulating on social media show irate fans breaching security barriers, chasing the officials across the field and striking them with various objects while law enforcement struggled to restore order.

Fan violence remains a recurrent issue in Nigeria’s domestic leagues, undermining ongoing efforts to improve the game’s credibility, ensure the safety of participants, and attract meaningful investment.

While Ekiti Queens suffered a narrow defeat on the field, the post-match chaos has drawn greater concern. The NWFL is expected to take decisive action, and its response will signal how seriously it intends to address crowd trouble and enforce discipline in the women’s top flight.
