Botswana President Duma Boko has encouraged the country’s senior women’s national team, the Mares, as they prepare for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) finals, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
Boko met with the team on Monday to wish them well ahead of their departure for the tournament in Morocco, which runs from July 13.
During his address, President Boko urged the players to represent their country with immense pride and confidence.
“The best attitude to take into the field is to enjoy yourself. It’s about unity, team spirit, and trusting in your ability. Keep believing, and remember the whole country stands firmly behind you.
“You represent the very best of Botswana, both on and off the pitch. Engage with match officials respectfully but assertively, and believe in yourself at all times.”
As a motivational gesture, the President presented the team with brand-new sneakers before their departure on Tuesday.
Additionally, companies donated toiletry hampers to aid the team during their stay in Morocco.
Botswana is placed in Group B alongside Algeria, Nigeria, and Tunisia all strong contenders in the competition.
