WAFCON 2024: Financial Troubles Threaten Black Queens' Campaign

Ghana’s Black Queens are facing a major financial crisis that could derail their preparations for the 2025 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations in Morocco, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

According to Citi Sports, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has informed the team that it lacks the necessary funds to finance their pre-tournament activities. Attempts to secure financial support from the Ministry of Sports and Recreation have so far proven unsuccessful, leaving the team’s preparations in jeopardy.

The Black Queens recently secured a return to the continental tournament under Swiss tactician Nora Hauptle, who has since taken charge of Zambia’s national women’s team. Despite renewed optimism following qualification, the current logistical and financial setbacks threaten to stall their momentum.

Typically, the GFA is responsible for travel, accommodation, and allowances, while coaching salaries are sourced from FIFA, CAF, or sponsors. However, the current funding gap has raised fresh concerns over the treatment and prioritization of women’s football in Ghana.

With group matches against Mali, South Africa, and Tanzania on the horizon, the Black Queens face a tough opener on July 7 against reigning champions South Africa amid uncertainty off the pitch.
