WAFCON 2024: Go For The Title – Oparanozie Urges Super Falcons
Sampson Adedeji
Former Super Falcons striker, Desire Oparanozie, has urged Nigeria’s women’s national team to finish their mission by clinching a record-extending 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title after their impressive 2-1 semi-final victory over defending champions South Africa on Tuesday, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
Oparanozie, who enjoyed a stellar international career with the Falcons, had earlier expressed confidence in the team’s ability to go all the way, and her faith was rewarded as Nigeria booked their spot in Sunday’s final against hosts Morocco.
"Yes, I think they can win WAFCON. Nigeria has talented players with winning experience, and I’m confident they will get the required result," Oparanozie told Showmax Premier League.
She praised the team’s cohesion and effort, saying: "They have all been great. Every one of them has shown up as a team, a really effective team; they’ve all been very brilliant on the field."
Reflecting on the tournament, the former forward commended the growing competitiveness of African women’s football: "This WAFCON edition has been thrilling, with top teams and players showcasing their skills and making history in every game. It’s a testament to how much women’s football in Africa has grown."
"Winning games is no longer a walk in the park every win comes from hard work. Teams are pushing themselves to earn their victories, and that’s very impressive," she added.
With South Africa out of the way, Nigeria now turns its focus to Sunday’s final against Morocco, aiming to lift their 10th WAFCON trophy and cement their dominance on the continent.
