WAFCON 2024: Madugu Says Super Falcons Still A Work In Progress, Reacts To Abiodun’s Suspension

Super Falcons head coach, Justin Madugu, has described his team as a “work in progress” following their hard-fought 1-0 win over Botswana at the ongoing 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Nigeria had to dig deep to secure victory, with Chinwendu Ihezuo netting the decisive goal in the 87th minute.

Speaking at the post-match press conference, Madugu acknowledged that while the win was vital, there’s still plenty of room for improvement within the squad.

“It’s always a work in progress. Even if we score 10 goals, there will still be things to work on,” he said. “We’ll definitely make some changes in the last game against Algeria.”

He clarified that the changes are not due to the strength of the opposition, but rather a strategic decision to rotate the squad and manage players’ workload.

“Not because we’re fielding a weaker team all our players are capable but because we need to manage the squad carefully. We could play up to six games in this tournament, so it’s important to rest some and give others a chance,” Madugu added.

The coach also confirmed that midfielder Deborah Abiodun will miss the final group game due to suspension after picking up two yellow cards.

“We’re aware of her suspension, but that opens up opportunities for others to step in and prove themselves. You can’t be the best without beating the best. It’s all part of the process,” he concluded.

Nigeria will face Algeria in their final group stage match as they aim to secure top spot in the group.
