WAFCON 2024: Tunisia, Algeria Battle To Stalemate In Fierce North African Derby
Sampson Adedeji
Tunisia and Algeria settled for a goalless draw in a fiercely contested Maghreb derby at the Stade Père Jégo in Casablanca, as both teams missed the chance to take charge of Group B at the ongoing 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), BSNSports.com.ng reports.
The encounter between the North African rivals delivered intensity and physicality but lacked the final touch, with neither side able to find the breakthrough in a tense affair.
Looking to bounce back from a disappointing 3-0 defeat to Nigeria in their opening match, Tunisia came out with greater urgency and attacking intent. However, their continued struggles in front of goal persisted, stretching their scoreless run at WAFCON finals to five matches.
Algeria, meanwhile, moved to four points from two games, maintaining their unbeaten run and putting themselves in a strong position ahead of their final group match against Nigeria.
Tunisia, now with just one point, face a do-or-die clash against Botswana as they aim to keep their hopes alive for a first-ever quarter-final berth.
