WAFCON 2024: We Deserved More Against Nigeria – Botswana Coach
Sampson Adedeji
Botswana women’s national team head coach, Alex Basimanebotlhe Malete, believes his side deserved more than a narrow 1-0 defeat to Nigeria’s Super Falcons at the ongoing 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
Speaking after the match, Malete expressed pride in his team’s effort, saying they showed great spirit throughout the game.
“I thought we deserved more. It was more about showing the spirit within the team. We have to stay positive. It’s a painful loss,” he said during the post-match press conference.
The Super Falcons secured victory late in the game thanks to an 88th-minute strike from substitute Chinwendu Ihezuo at the Stade Larbi Zaouli in Casablanca, sealing their place in the quarterfinals.
Despite suffering back-to-back defeats, Malete insisted his players gave everything on the pitch and were simply edged by Nigeria’s quality.
“There’s still an opportunity for us to reach the quarterfinals,” he added. “I remain positive after today’s performance. It’s something we can build on as we prepare for the next match. We are now forced to win and we will win.”
