Banyana Banyana striker Jermaine Seoposenwe has officially announced her retirement from international football following South Africa’s heartbreaking penalty shootout defeat to Ghana in the third-place playoff of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The 31-year-old forward, born in Cape Town, ends a remarkable 15-year journey with the national team, during which she earned 112 caps and cemented her status as one of South Africa’s greatest-ever female footballers.

Seoposenwe etched her name in history as the first South African woman to score at a FIFA World Cup in 2010. 

Over her illustrious career, she featured in two FIFA Women’s World Cups, two Olympic Games, and four WAFCON tournaments, leaving behind an indelible legacy in women’s football.

 “Obviously, I made that decision before the tournament, and so coming into the tournament, I have been very settled, very calm,” Seoposenwe said.

“A lot of the players have joked with me about my legacy and all those things, but it’s very interesting to be in that position. For me, it’s just been a sense of relief.”

The CF Monterrey striker played a key role in Banyana Banyana’s historic 2022 WAFCON triumph, scoring twice in the competition, including vital goals against Nigeria in the group stage and Tunisia in the quarter-finals helping South Africa secure their long-awaited continental crown.
