WAFCON 2026: South Africa Sports Minister Withdraws Deputy’s Claims, Confirms Morocco As Host

The South African Minister of Sport Gayton McKenzie has formally retracted recent comments made by the Deputy Minister regarding the hosting rights of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), reaffirming that Morocco remains the official host nation for the tournament, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

In an official statement released on Monday, the Minister clarified that no decision has been taken to relocate the tournament, stressing that Morocco is still scheduled to host the competition in March 2026.

The statement also dismissed reports suggesting that the Confederation of African Football (CAF) had begun processes to identify an alternative host country.

“CAF has not initiated any procedures for a change of host, and Morocco remains the confirmed venue for WAFCON 2026,” the Minister said.

The clarification comes after widespread speculation across African football circles, triggered by remarks attributed to the Deputy Minister, which suggested a possible shift in hosting arrangements.

With the official position now restated, attention returns to Morocco’s preparations for the continental women’s showpiece, as CAF and participating nations continue planning for the 2026 edition of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
