WAFCON 2026: Super Falcons Opponent Hit By Crisis As Zambia Coach Steps Down

The camp of one of Nigeria’s opponents at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) has been thrown into turmoil following the resignation of Zambia head coach Nora Elizabeth Häuptle, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The Swiss tactician stepped down from her role with the Copper Queens ahead of the tournament in Morocco, citing deep concerns about the structure and long-term sustainability of women’s football in Zambia.

In a strongly worded statement built around the values of love, unity, and passion, Häuptle acknowledged the team’s recent progress on the pitch but warned that underlying issues could hinder future success.

She described the past year as a difficult period, pointing to leadership changes within the Football Association of Zambia and the postponement of the WAFCON tournament as key challenges affecting stability.

Häuptle stressed that her decision was driven by a desire to see meaningful reforms implemented, insisting that full commitment is required to compete at the highest level.

“Passion requests 100 percent commitment… a little bit less effort is not enough to be successful at the highest level,” she stated, while also cautioning that other African nations are rapidly advancing in the women’s game.

She further emphasized the importance of building a lasting legacy for future generations of Zambian footballers.

Zambia are drawn in Group C of the tournament alongside Nigeria, Malawi, and Egypt.
