The 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) is set to be postponed following a formal request from the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) to the Confederation of African Football (CAF), BSNSports.com.ng reports.
In a communication to CAF, the FRMF informed the continental body of its inability to host the tournament next month due to congestion in the domestic football calendar.
Morocco’s top-flight Botola Pro League has already suffered multiple postponements as a result of major international competitions, including the African Nations Championship (CHAN), the Arab Cup, and the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
With the scheduling pressure creating logistical and operational challenges, the Moroccan federation has officially requested that CAF shift the tournament to a later date.
CAF is yet to make a formal announcement on the matter, but discussions are ongoing regarding a new timetable for the competition.
The 2026 WAFCON is of major significance, as the four semi-finalists will automatically qualify to represent Africa at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil, making the tournament a crucial pathway for continental teams to the global stage.
