Chief Executive Officer of Water FC, Makanjuola Nureni, popularly known as MK, has been honoured as one of the 100 Most Influential Individuals in Nigeria at the 2025 edition of the Progressive Awards, held at Barcelona Hotel, Wuse 2, Abuja, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
Beaming with pride after receiving the prestigious recognition, MK expressed heartfelt gratitude and reaffirmed his commitment to grassroots football development.
“I give all glory to God Almighty and sincerely thank the Progressive Awards for recognizing my efforts. This honour motivates me to do even more for Nigerian sports, particularly football,” MK told BSN Sports on the award night.
This recognition is a testament to MK’s exceptional contributions to the development of football in Nigeria, particularly at the grassroots level. Through Water FC, a club he founded and nurtured, MK has created a platform that not only discovers and develops young talents but also transforms lives and communities.
Empowering Dreams Through Football
MK’s journey in football began with a personal passion for the sport. But over the years, it evolved into a mission to tap into Nigeria’s deep reservoir of football talent, much of it hidden in overlooked communities. In founding Water FC, he created more than a club — he built a movement.
Under his leadership, Water FC has grown into a powerhouse of youth football development. The club boasts modern training facilities, elite-level coaching, and a comprehensive scouting network that spans the country. Players developed at Water FC have gone on to represent Nigeria at various levels, including the U-17 and U-20 World Cups. Notably, Michael Babatunde, a former Water FC product, has become a mainstay in professional football.
A Catalyst for Social Impact
Beyond the pitch, MK’s work has had a ripple effect in local communities. Water FC has become a beacon of hope for thousands of young Nigerians, offering opportunities for personal growth, education, and career advancement. The club’s success has also stimulated local economies, with small businesses emerging around training hubs to support team activities.
As a philanthropist and mentor, MK’s unwavering dedication to youth empowerment through sports has made him a respected figure both within and beyond the football ecosystem. His recognition among Nigeria’s 100 Most Influential Individuals serves as a validation of his tireless efforts and visionary leadership.
“This award is not just for me,” MK added, “It’s for every young player out there with a dream and every coach who believes in the power of grassroots football. Together, we’re building the future.”
With plans to further expand Water FC’s reach and influence, MK remains steadfast in his mission to elevate Nigerian football — one player, one community, and one dream at a time.
