Former Super Eagles forward Obinna Nsofor has urged Nigeria to improve the maintenance of its sporting facilities if the country hopes to successfully host the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Nsofor made the remarks during an interview with Brila FM, where he criticised the poor state of stadium infrastructure across the country.

According to the former international, Nigeria lacks a proper maintenance culture, a situation he said has affected many stadiums built with huge investments.

“In Nigeria we don’t have a maintenance culture.

"We spend huge money building stadiums and after a few years everything starts falling apart. If we are serious about hosting AFCON, then we must first tell ourselves the truth because CAF cannot approve facilities that are below standard,” Nsofor said.

He added that Nigeria is currently not prepared to host the continental tournament due to inadequate infrastructure.

“The truth is that Nigeria is not ready to host AFCON right now because the infrastructure is not there.

"We only have one stadium that can properly host CAF qualifying games and that is embarrassing for a country like Nigeria.

A stadium like the Abuja National Stadium should never be in the condition it is today,” he stated.
