The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has explained the reason behind the postponement of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) scheduled to be held in Morocco, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
CAF on Thursday confirmed that the competition, which was earlier scheduled to take place in March, has now been moved to July/August 2026.
According to the African football governing body, the decision followed consultations with key partners, including FIFA and other stakeholders involved in the organisation of the tournament.
CAF explained that the adjustment of the calendar was necessary to guarantee the smooth organisation and overall success of the women’s championship.
“After discussions between CAF and its partners, FIFA and other stakeholders, CAF has decided to reschedule the WAFCON to ensure the success of this important women’s competition, in light of certain unforeseen circumstances,” the body said in a statement.
The 2026 WAFCON will see Africa’s top women’s national teams compete for continental glory, with defending champions Nigeria women's national football team expected to be among the favourites for the title.
